CCLC’s spiritual predecessor, the Christian Literature Society, was the largest publishing house in Shanghai when established in 1887. For the forthcoming 25 years, its main purposes were to publish religious books in Chinese language and introduce political thoughts and sciences from the West. In the later years came other commercial publishers who helped expand the knowledge of western ideas throughout China, the CLS therefore focused its service in providing reference books and other religious materials for local churches and seminaries.

With the foundation of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, most of the foreign missionaries and the foreign staff of CLS left for Hong Kong. Consequently, the Council on Christian Literature for Overseas Chinese was established in 1951 with the goal of providing religious and reference books to serve Chinese Christians overseas. In 1965, the name was changed to Chinese Christian Literature Council (CCLC). As a result, Chinese directors without the help of foreign missionaries decided the direction and policy of publishing.

CCLC has been a non-profit, self-supporting organization since 1973. CCLC now owns its offices, two warehouses, the Kowloon bookroom and publisher’s residence. CCLC currently employs approximately 20 staff.
